Q. What if my plants do not break dormancy?
Plants are guaranteed live when they leave the nursery. We propagate and grow our plants with the highest standards and carefully monitor their growth. We guarantee that our plants are in good condition when they leave our nursery.
We cannot be responsible for risks beyond our control such as shipper error, fire, flood, excessively warm or cold temperatures, drought, insects and unfavorable planting conditions.
We would like you to have great success with our plants so we encourage you to follow the planting and care instructions included with your shipment.
(For spring dormant plants) Your plants should break dormancy within 2 weeks of planting, (please note: follow the planting instructions included with your order). If they have not broken dormancy within this time period please call us immediately and send us pictures of the plants so we can determine the problem. We will happily replace your plants or issue a refund at our discretion.
Q. How old are PrairieTech’s plants?
Our plants are one year old. The plants are brought from the tissue culture lab in late winter and spring, are planted in small pots and moved to our greenhouses for the summer and fall. By November or December, the plants naturally set bud and go into dormancy. They are then graded, packed in boxes and placed in our controlled-temperature freezers until the following spring.
Q. How big are PrairieTech’s plants?
The size of our plants will vary since we grow so many species. However, we grade our plants during packing and use a minimum of 15 cm (6”) height and a maximum of 45 cm (18”) as a standard.
Q. How long will it be before I have some fruit?
It depends on what you are growing. All of our fruit plants are perennial and will, for the first 2-3 years, put most of their energy into building up the root system and the abov eground shoot system, so don’t be too anxious to get a heavy harvest. Please see the charts on each cultivars page for more specific details.
Q. Do my plants need another type of plant to produce fruit?
Most of the species we grow are self-pollinating so they don’t have any special pollination requirements i.e. they pollinate themselves e.g. cherries. Some, however, like haskaps, need to
be cross-pollinated by a genetically distinct plant, usually another cultivar. These pollinizers must be planted reasonably close to the plant they are to pollinize so there’s a successful transfer of pollen.

Q. What kind of containers are PrairieTech’s plants grown in?
Most are grown in plastic pots that are 6.7 cm x 6.7 cm x 9 cm deep, with a liquid volume measurement of 280 ml. These plants are shipped in the pots.
Q. Are your plants bareroot?
No, all of our plants are grown in containers in the greenhouse, described above. We do not grow any PrairieTech plants as bareroot and we do not grow any plants for the second year. All of our stock is 1 year old.
Q. How do you ship PrairieTech plants?
Most of our plants are shipped by Expedited Parcel through Canada Post at pre-determined postage rates.
Plants can be shipped by Greyhound bus if the customer is close to a depot. In that case, plants are shipped collect and the customer will pay the shipping charge upon pick-up.

We ship our boxes to the USDA in South San Francisco by Canada Post/ USPS, from there to your address you need to supply us with a UPS or FEDEX account number to give to the USDA to ship by ground from there.

Q. What if I have a large order?
Large orders (over 10 boxes) should be shipped by truck. Trucking rates for large orders are more economical than mail or bus and the shipment can be palletized so the boxes are kept together. The shipping rate will be provided closer to the shipping date as shipping quotes are only good for 30 days.

If the shipment is large and will be shipped by truck (+ 10 boxes), the customer will need a broker to facilitate the shipment, it is best to use a broker that can arrange for the shipping as well for a smoother transition over the border.
Q. How long will it take to get my plants after they’ve been shipped?
We ship from east-central Alberta so shipments to Alberta and Saskatchewan will take up to 3 days; to British Columbia will take 4 days; to Ontario, 6-7 days and to Quebec, 7-8 days; to Atlantic Canada, 8-9 days; to Yukon, 5 days and the Northwest Territories, 4 days.
Upon shipping, customers will receive an e-mail or phone call from us with a Canada Post tracking number. They should check the progress of their shipment online or at their postal outlet. Although our plants are shipped from a freezer, they will thaw as they travel so it’s best to unpack them as soon as possible.
Q. What if I want to ship PrairieTech’s plants to the United States?
We will obtain the phytosanitary certificate from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency which needs to accompany your shipment.
It is the customer’s responsibility to fulfill any import requirements by the USDA. Please contact your local USDA to check if any import certificates are required.
If the shipment is large and will be shipped by truck (+ 10 boxes), the customer will need a broker to facilitate the shipment.
