Dr. Evans Selections

These plants have all been selected by Dr. Ieuen Evans.

The Cedar (propagated by seed) will be wrapped in bundles of 10. The Mountain Ash, Chokecherry, and Maple Poplar will be in 2.5″ pots and both are propagated through tissue culture.

Fruit/Seeds/ Cones

  • Fruit: Cones, 7-12mm long, grow in clusters

Tree

  • Height: up to 13m(40ft)
  • Spread:
  • Leaves: Small yellowish green scaly leaves on fan shaped branches
  • Sunlight: Full sun
  • Other: Not browsed upon by deer or moose unlike the Western Cedar
    • Zone 2

Chokecherry-Lee Black

Fruit

  • Fruit:    Start off red and turning black when ripe in late August
    • Sweet tasting, juicy fruit
  • Flower:    White
  • Other:    Berries make a very good jelly
    • Loved by birds who will devour them by mid-October if not picked

Tree

  • Height:    4.5-6m (15-20ft) at a rate of about 30cm (1ft) per year
  • Spread:   3-5m  (10-16ft), moderate spread similar to the Schubert Chokecherry
  • Leaves:    Deep purple to black
    • Glossy deep purple on top, with a red purple color on the underside
  • Sunlight:    Half to full sun
  • Other:    Immune to black knot fungus
    •   Zone 2

  • Fruit: Orange sweet berries
  • Flower: Small white
  • Other: The berries can be made into a sweet/sharp golden jam or jelly
    • Rich in iron and vitamin C

  • Spread:
  • Leaves: Dark green
  • Sunlight: Full or part sun
  • Other:   Much favored by robins over common Mountain Ash
    • Trees are picked clean by birds in October
    • Zone 2

Poplar-Maple(white)

  • Other:    Male no fuzz

  • Height:    Up to 18m (60ft)
  • Spread:    Up to 15m (49ft)
  • Leaves:    Dark green above, whitish, hairy below, maple shaped
  • Sunlight:    Partial shade to full sun
  •  Other:    Excellent specimen tree with large maple silver white leaves
  • Use for farmstead windbreaks, and highway beautification
  • Suckers from roots
